“Why did God even create man?” my daughter asked me yesterday. It reminded me of a similar question her older sister posed several years ago when a 19-year-old friend died in a car accident: “Why do we have to do this earth thing anyways, Mama?”

She wasn’t wrestling with why it happened. Rather, she reasoned, if God knows who is going to heaven anyway (see Ephesians 1:4-6), why even make us come to earth where there is pain, suffering, and death?

I scanned my mental computer for everything I’d ever read or heard that might serve as the right answer. There were a few that sort of related, but just weren’t it, like a pair of jeans that sort of fits, but not in the right places.

“Well, sweetie, that’s a great question,” I replied. “I don’t know the answer.”

We talked about the fact that we’ll never fully understand God because He is God and we are human. We touched on His sovereignty and the reality of His goodness and love, that even when bad things happen, He is still God. He is still good. He is still faithful and trustworthy. And He still keeps His promises to us.

I knew only truth straight from the word of God would satisfy and build her faith in her time of deep questioning. Determination dug its heels deep within me.

“I will find out,” I promised.

I asked the Holy Spirit to give me understanding of the Bible and to show me the answer to her exact question. Then I started digging.

My journey started at with creation and was full of mystery, dominion, family, friendship, worship, glory, heaven, and good works, all before I ever stumbled upon the mother lode!

I can’t wait to share more Thursday! But first, let’s agree on a few hard truths.

Hard Truths for Firm Faith

    1. Some things about God are and always will be a mystery (see Deuteronomy 29:29). Tweet this!
    2. The Lord chooses what He wants to divulge. What He doesn’t belongs to Him alone, and it’s not our place to question (see Isaiah 45:9 and Job 9:12). Tweet this!
    3. If we base our view of God on people and/or circumstances, it’s going to be warped; we need to look into the word of God for the truth of who He is. Tweet this!

God reveals deep and secret things (Daniel 2:22); His secret is with those who fear Him (Psalm 25:14). Sometimes it’s hard not to question God. As we place our faith in and trust Him because of who He is, and as we search His word, He will disclose things to us. When we don’t get answers, we can know He is still God and we are still in His perfect care.

Lord, reveal deep and secret things to us as we fear You, becoming more wholly Yours by seeking our answers in Your word and trusting You even when we don’t get them.
