We're on Earth Because God Needs Us Here

It’s the 13th anniversary of 9/11, and things are crazy in our world! Do you ever wonder why God created humans when He knew the evil we’d embrace and the tragedies sin would produce?Let’s excavate God’s word for the answer, starting with creation (Genesis 1:1-26).The earth was without form. Void.God spoke day and night into existence.He created heaven, earth, and sea.He saw it was good and kept going until there was grass, herbs, fruit trees, the sun, moon, and stars, and every living thing in the water, sky, and on earth.It all pleased Him, yet, in forming the earth to be inhabited (Isaiah 45:18), He had no one to tend to it, so He made man and gave him dominion over the works of His hands (Hebrews 2:7).Great answer! Right?The deeper question still nags, though, especially when you consider all God knew before He ever started:

  1. He knew His first humans, Adam and Eve, would eat the forbidden fruit and sin would eternally separate created from Creator;
  2. He knew He’d send His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to pay the penalty for sin, bringing salvation to those who place their faith in Him;
  3. He knew He’d raise Jesus from the dead and seat Him at His right hand in heaven, where He came from in the first place; and,
  4. He knew who He’d predestined “to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself” (Ephesians 1:5), so He knows who’s coming to heaven.

Why not just keep everything the way it was, perfectly perfect in heaven in the first place? Couldn’t we just be one big, happy, heavenly family?Maybe, except we were created for God’s glory (Isaiah 43:7), and that happens here on earth. Tweet this! If we are God’s children, then we’re heirs, “heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Romans 8:17). In our weakness and suffering, the life of Jesus is manifested in our bodies:

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed – always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body (2 Corinthians 4:6-10).

The reason it has to be on earth, as we’ll see Thursday, is because of the audience.God wants us here on earth because of who’s watching.Lord, as Your children, may we glorify Your name and magnify Jesus as we become more wholly Yours today.Want to read more about why earth?
