Meaty Minute: It's All About Me
It's all about me.Me, me, me.It’s the focus of our flesh and the antithesis of following Jesus.These last eighteen months or so, God’s shown me the many ways I make things about me. How deep the me in me can be. Its power to rule my thoughts and decisions opposite my good intentions.Opposite. The way God’s ways often are to us and our me-minded flesh and culture. Like when Jesus says, "He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25).What if God’s perspective of me is simply the opposite of ours. Instead of being all about us, it’s really all about Him. What if we looked at me backwards, the way God’s perspective looks to us sometimes.
“What would that be to You, Lord?” I asked.Here’s what He answered:
E = Eternally
M = Minded
And really, there’s nothing backwards about it when we put it back in order and see me from God’s perspective:
M = Merely
E = Eternal
Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us God “has put eternity in (our) hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.”God put it in us to know there is something greater than us. Something bigger than just me, me, me. Every detail of our lives is part of an eternal picture. We either make those details – the good and the challenging – about us, or we learn it’s really all about Him.We learn to have an eternal perspective, of which Paul says:
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).
How do we adopt this perspective?
And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom You have sent (John 17:3).
We get to know the only true God. We get to know the Christ whom He sent. We become eternally minded, and in that sense, we see it’s all about me: Merely Eternal.
